The Government statement said: “We support the European Medicines Agency’s efforts to develop and market a generic version of sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Sildenafil citrate is indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and for the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).”
The EUMDA said sildenafil citrate “has proven effective and safe in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men” and “improves sexual performance in response to sexual stimulation”.
It added: “We are grateful for the positive results from our Phase III trial, which demonstrated sildenafil citrate’s efficacy in improving erectile function in men and improving sexual satisfaction and performance.
“We are committed to meeting the needs of patients, healthcare professionals and the general public and are working to ensure that erectile dysfunction remains a serious public health problem that needs to be treated in a timely manner.”
The EUMDA also said that sildenafil citrate “has a good safety profile in men with pulmonary arterial hypertension and is well-tolerated”.
The EUMDA said it was “committed to work together to develop a generic version of sildenafil citrate to meet the needs of men with ED”.

Sildenafil citrate has been well tolerated in clinical trials with the results indicating improvement in erectile function in men with ED who have a positive response to therapy.
